Following a comprehensive study of the existing fire department headquarters, Fire Station 71 and satellite Fire Station 73 for the City of Shawnee, Kansas, GLMV is planning and designing comprehensive renovations and expansions to both facilities.
Both municipal fire and County EMS are included in the projects, Hot Zone and immersive design strategies are both at the forefront of the design to provide contaminant control between apparatus bays and living quarters as well as to address behavior health and resiliency through the use of natural materials, daylighting, and bunking strategies to mitigate sleep deprivation. Improving site circulation and separating apparatus from public traffic was also an important goal for the City of Shawnee.
Bringing modern fire station design thinking and providing the necessary administrative and operational functionality to aged and limited facilities presented unique challenges as the facilities did not have the necessary space or adjacencies to easily support improvements. A focus on health and wellness of the crew was paramount in the development of the design solutions. The exterior of both facilities is also being improved to provide a more consistent image and follow the City’s municipal facility design style standards.
