North Carolina Zoo | Master Plan

When the largest zoo in the world wanted to develop a vision capable of transforming a region, they asked us to partner with them. The North Carolina Zoo needed to convince the state that a significant investment into the zoo would return five-fold for the region and state. They needed help determining if a multi-day, varied experience facility was possible. We explored hotel concepts, outdoor adventures, expansion of the current zoo, and more. Big dreaming was the idea and it worked. The State of NC gave its first ever 20+ million-dollar allocation to the zoo in over 30 years.

Project Details

The expanded Zoo will be a hub for recreational tourism and development in the eastern U.S. and aspires to triple its economic impact in the region to reach $300 million in annual spending and create an added 3,000 jobs to further bolster the economy. Funding will be sought from the State, partners, and donors for the eight-phase, $500 million plan, planned on a 20-year timeline. Phases consist of meeting infrastructure needs, transportation, research and conservation, expansive habitats, education facilities, outdoor activities, and lodging.
