The Douglas Avenue and Lewis/Maple Street bridges in Wichita, Kansas were designed as a result of an international design competition. From their location over the Arkansas River, they were designed to complement one another and contribute a distinct identity to downtown Wichita. Each bridge was carefully crafted to fit the City’s Master Plan of the Riverwalk Corridor. The Douglas Avenue bridge was intended to be a landmark, a more centered shape and visually dominant. The Lewis/Maple Street bridge is a link between the east and west banks of the riverwalk. The identity of the Lewis/Maple bridge is that of line. The stainless-steel towers form a zigzag line across the water, and paving patterns evoke movement
